Pretty Butterflies

I recently created a watercolor collage of embossed butterflies for a wedding gift.  It was so much fun.  Let me show you the process.

I started with my favorite watercolor paper, Strathmore Cold Press 140 lb.  I guess I must use more water than most because I have trouble with other papers pilling up.  It's the fibers in the paper that just fall apart when soaked with water.  I don't have any problem with this paper.  It's heavy enough to hold up and it also has a smooth and a textured side.  It's nice to have a choice depending on your project.  I stamped the large butterfly imge, Swallowtail from Stampin' Up!, in Versamark ink and then heat embossed it with Ranger Liquid Platinum silver powder.

I painted a soft blue wash for the background and then began painting each butterfly individually, choosing the colors and seeing how they blended.  A lot of practice and trial and error.  However, painting with watercolors is not an exact science so there really is no right or wrong.

Here's the final panel and the one I sent as my gift.

More blues and greens.  I love it!
Thanks for stopping by to see what I've been creating.
Have a great day.
